Communications Team: Social Media

This position requires approximately 5 hours per week, and successful candidates will be able to make at least six months commitment to the role.

Position Description:

The ICTYN's Communications Team is currently looking to recruit a Social Media Specialist in a voluntary capacity. The successful candidate will work under the direct management of the Director of Communications to develop and enhance ICTYN presence across new media.

This is an opportunity to join the growing team of ICTYN and be part of an engaged global community of outstanding students interested in security and counter-terrorism issues.

This position requires approximately up to five hours per week; successful candidates will be able to make at least six months commitment to the role.

Tasks and Responsibilities

As part of the communications team, the Social Media Specialist is responsible for executing ICTYN’s social media strategy. The position reports directly to the Director of Communications, and entails working closely with research project managers.

Daily responsibilities include working with communications team to create social media strategies around ICTYN activities to increase awareness and event promotion, interacting with existing and potential members through social media, promoting general member engagement, and managing ICTYN’s social media accounts.

  1. Informs overall communications strategy with social media tactical plan, coordinating with relevant staff on content development and timing of posts;
  2. Manages and fosters relationships between ICTYN staff and members through social media channels (i.e. posting engaging questions, responding to member inquiries, etc.);
  3. Utilizes social media, such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and other emerging media platforms to engage existing members and social media participants as well as to attract new members;
  4. Contributes to team effort of promoting ICTYN activities and publications through our social media channels;
  5. Embrace ad-hoc projects within the Communications team;
  6. Contribute new ideas on how to increase the profile of ICTYN globally.
Desired Skills and Experience
  1. Avid user of popular social media platforms with knowledge of trends, key words, etc.;
  2. Experience in developing and implementing a social media strategy for a non-profit organization desired, but not required;
  3. Be self-motivated, well organised and able to work efficiently and autonomously, as part of a small team;
  4. Ability to meet deadlines and work with the Director of Communications to adhere to a schedule;
  5. Excellent written and spoken English skills;
  6. Well-developed interpersonal skills;
  7. Good communication skills and the ability to interact with external partners and potential sponsors;
  8. Detail oriented and prompt response to emails.
Eligibility and Selection
  1. This position requires approximately 5 hours per week.
  2. Position is unpaid and part-time.
  3. Candidates are not required to be ICTYN members to apply.
