Radicalisation and Violent Extremism Programme

This position requires approximately 5 hours per week, and successful candidates will be able to make at least six months commitment to the role.

Position Description:

The International Counter-Terrorism Youth Network (ICTYN) is currently looking to recruit Research Analysts in a voluntary capacity for the Radicalization and Violent Extremism programme.

This role will focus on supporting ICTYN’s rapidly expanding portfolio of work on radicalisation, violent extremism and foreign fighters. Building on work aimed at providing guidelines as to how authorities should tackle the issues in question, the successful applicants will work on formulating a comprehensive index of radicalisation of European countries. This index will include Jihadi, right/left wing, and any other type of terrorism, and will feature anything ranging from mere rhetoric (ideological support), to actual engagement in violence.

This position requires approximately 5 hours per week, and successful candidates will be able to make at least six months commitment to the role.

Tasks and Responsibilities

Successful applicants will work under the direction of the Project Manager and will be responsible for the following activities.

  1. Carrying out research and other activities in support of the Radicalisation and Violent Extremism programme;
  2. Supporting the development of research-related events, such as workshops, seminars and conferences; 
  3. Executing and further developing research projects and collaborating with others in the team to develop new ideas; 
  4. Publishing research;
  5. Taking initiative and interest in opportunities such as interviews and literature reviews;
  6. Promoting ICTYN content;
  7. Contributing research expertise to other ICTYN research projects where appropriate.
Desired Skills and Experience
  1. Experience, interest, and passion in researching radicalisation and violent extremism;
  2. Good analytical skills and expertise — preferably in both qualitative and quantitative methodologies;
  3. Ability to work remotely and independently and display initiative and personal responsibility;
  4. Ability to meet deadlines and work with the project manager to adhere to a schedule;
  5. Willingness to contribute to the public understanding of your field, including through social media engagements;
  6. Be self-motivated, well organised and able to work efficiently and autonomously, as part of a small team;
  7. Well-developed interpersonal skills;
  8. Good communication skills and the ability to interact with external partners and potential sponsors;
  9. Detail oriented and prompt response to emails.
Eligibility and Selection
  1. Ideally an early career security/counter-terrorism professional or current graduate/undergraduate student in a relevant field;
  2. Position is unpaid and part-time;
  3. Candidates are not required to be ICTYN members to apply.
